North West businessman Suliman Carrim is due to appear in the Musina Magistrate’s Court in connection with two cases involving the alleged attempted theft of motor vehicles.

The South African Police Service said its Commissions Recommendations Task Team added Carrim as an accused on Wednesday, 21 October 2026. The cases also involve allegations of fraud and uttering linked to documents allegedly used to move two financed vehicles toward the Beitbridge border.

The National Prosecuting Authority in Limpopo said Carrim is expected to face charges of attempted theft and money laundering. The precise charges and his plea will be confirmed through the court process.

What police allege

According to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, the cases arise from an incident on 22 July 2026. Police stationed at the Beitbridge border post in Musina intercepted two vehicles that had allegedly been transported from Mahikeng and were reportedly intended for onward travel to Malawi.

Two suspects were arrested at the time and charged with attempted theft of motor vehicles, fraud and uttering. They remain in custody and are expected to appear in the Musina Regional Court on 27 October.

Police allege that arrangements had been made to obtain authorisation from the financing bank for the vehicles to cross the border legally. When the required approval was allegedly not provided, fraudulent bank documents were reportedly arranged.

The two vehicles were still under finance and were handed back to the bank, police said. The authenticity and origin of the documents, as well as the role allegedly played by each accused, form part of the continuing investigation.

Key dates in the vehicle case

Date Development
22 July 2026 Police intercept two financed vehicles near the Beitbridge border post.
21 October 2026 Carrim is added as an accused in the two existing cases.
22 October 2026 Carrim is expected to make his first Musina court appearance in the matter.
27 October 2026 The two accused arrested at the border are expected in the regional court.

A separate court matter

The vehicle case is separate from proceedings linked to Carrim’s alleged failure to appear before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry. He was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on 15 October while preparing to travel abroad.

In that matter, Carrim faces a charge under the Commissions Act. Prosecutors have opposed bail, while his legal team has disputed suggestions that he intended to evade proceedings. His bail judgment in the Pretoria matter is scheduled for 28 October.

The court has heard that investigators verified a residential address and a return airline ticket presented by Carrim’s defence. The State nevertheless maintained its opposition to bail. Those arguments relate to the separate commission matter and should not be treated as evidence in the vehicle case.

What happens next

Carrim’s Musina appearance is expected to clarify the formal charge sheet, whether he will apply for bail in this matter and the next court date. The State will ultimately have to prove the allegations through admissible evidence.

LEGAL NOTE
The allegations have not been proven in court. Carrim and his co-accused are presumed innocent unless and until found guilty.
