Product choices, useful portions and savings you can actually claim matter more than the name on the bag.
Woolies or Checkers? It sounds like a question about where you shop, but it quickly becomes a debate about taste, price, freshness and whether a familiar name deserves your loyalty.
There are sensible reasons to choose either. A product your family enjoys, a useful discount or a convenient way to get dinner on the table can all justify the decision. The harder question is whether those benefits still make sense when you compare the full cost.
There is no verified, same-day matched grocery basket behind this article, so it does not name an overall cheapest retailer. It examines the product choices and published benefits that can change the answer for your household. Retailer terms were checked on 31 October 2026.

Start with the food, not the shop
The cleanest price comparison is the same branded product, in the same size and variant. Once you compare different own-label products, you also need to ask what is different inside the pack.
Eggs illustrate why specification matters. Woolworths says it sells only local free-range eggs. A fair comparison with Checkers must match egg size, pack count and production claims. No matched Checkers egg listing was verified for this article, so no like-for-like egg-price claim is made. Woolworths product information.
Where Woolworths can make a convincing case
If you repeatedly buy a particular Woolworths meal, yoghurt or bakery product because it works for your household, that preference has value. The relevant question is how much extra, if anything, you are paying for it compared with an alternative you would actually enjoy.
Woolworths’ food range includes ready meals and prepared fruit and vegetables alongside everyday groceries. Preparation can save time, but compare a prepared meal with another prepared meal before deciding which retailer offers better value. Comparing it with raw ingredients answers a different question: whether doing the preparation yourself is worth the saving. Woolworths food range.
The case for staying with Woolies is strongest when you can identify the benefit: a specific product, the right portion, a suitable ingredient list or dependable results in your own kitchen. The badge alone does not establish that every item is better, lasts longer or costs more.
Why Checkers deserves a product-by-product look
Checkers’ Sixty60 app brings groceries and larger Checkers Hyper items into the same service. That offers a broader shopping option, but it does not establish that a particular grocery item is cheaper or better. Retailer-authored Sixty60 listing, updated 22 October 2026.
The strongest reason to switch is a replacement that meets your needs at a better final price, not an assumption that every item in one store is cheaper. Try an unfamiliar own-label product in a small quantity before replacing a month’s supply. If it disappoints and goes unused, its shelf-price advantage was not much help.
Loyalty can change the bill, but read the conditions
Woolworths’ current programme is MyDifference, which brought WRewards and MySchool together. It offers instant savings and personalised vouchers, but the vouchers must be activated before shopping. Its ordinary programme’s cashback comes through Play & Win; it is not a guaranteed percentage off every basket. MyDifference benefits and FAQs.
Checkers’ Xtra Savings deals are available through Sixty60 as well as in-store, according to the retailer’s app listing. Xtra Savings Plus is a separate paid subscription; its advertised fee and headline benefits are shown below. Full eligibility and limits should be checked in the app before subscribing. Retailer-authored Sixty60 listing, updated 22 October 2026.
| Offer | Published amount or rule | What it means for your budget |
|---|---|---|
| Woolies Dash | R45 delivery per order, effective 10 November 2025 | Four orders cost R180 in delivery alone, before groceries or any other charges |
| Xtra Savings Plus | R99 per month, according to the retailer-authored app listing | A fixed cost that must be covered by benefits you actually use; check current eligibility and limits in the app |
| Plus qualifying delivery | A delivery benefit is advertised in the app listing; full qualifying conditions were not independently verified | Check the current qualifying conditions in the app before relying on the benefit |

Woolworths also has a separate, financial-product-linked MyDifference PLUS offering. Its conditional cashback should not be confused with ordinary MyDifference benefits or treated as free grocery savings without considering the associated account terms. MyDifference PLUS.
The food you use matters as much as the food you buy
Saving on a bigger pack only helps if you use it. The same applies to buying extra items to unlock a promotion or delivery benefit. A smaller pack can have a higher price per kilogram yet cost your household less overall if it avoids unwanted food.
| Share of the purchase used | Effective cost per usable unit versus using it all |
|---|---|
| 100% | No increase |
| 90% | 11.1% higher |
| 80% | 25% higher |
Calculation: purchase cost divided by the share used. These are mathematical scenarios, not measured waste rates or shelf-life results for either retailer.
So, which one deserves your grocery budget?
Neither brand deserves your whole basket by default. Keep Woolworths products where their taste, specification or convenience earns your loyalty. Switch those items to Checkers when an acceptable alternative offers better final value, and apply exactly the same test in the other direction. A mixed shop is worth testing, but only if the savings survive the extra effort and costs.
For your next shop, compare a short list of products you buy repeatedly, on the same day and for the same area. Match sizes and specifications, record both ordinary and eligible member prices, then add delivery or travel costs. If you split the shop, include the extra trip or second delivery. Keep track of what is actually used before repeating the exercise.
That gives you a reason to stay or switch which is stronger than habit. Which product would you keep buying at Woolies or Checkers even if you moved the rest of your shop?
