Young South Africans are being urged to vote in the 4 November local government elections. Before leaving home, the practical question is simpler: are you registered at the station you plan to use?
What voters should know
Deputy Minister in the Presidency Nonceba Mhlauli said on 2 November that eligible voters, particularly young people, should take part. Special voting is taking place on Monday and Tuesday, followed by Election Day on Wednesday, 4 November.
| Check | What to do |
|---|---|
| Voting station | Vote at the station where you are registered. |
| Use the IEC service on 0600 88 0000. | |
| SMS | Send your ID number to 32810. The service costs R1. |
Why the message matters beyond turnout
Mhlauli’s appeal also points to participation after the ballot. Ward and council meetings are among the channels residents can use to follow local decisions once councillors are elected. Voting is one part of local accountability, not its endpoint.
What this announcement does not change
The statement does not alter registration rules, voting dates or station requirements. It is a participation appeal, not a new election directive. Voters should use the IEC’s official services for their own registration details.
