ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula reportedly collapsed after an emotional address following the party’s Constitutional Court victory over 181 election candidates, according to eNCA.
The broadcaster reported the incident on Thursday, 15 October 2026. SABC News also described Mbalula becoming emotional and tearful after the ruling.
What is known about Mbalula’s condition?
At the time of writing, SA Business Lens has not independently verified the cause of the reported collapse, whether Mbalula required hospital treatment, or his current condition.
The collapse report is attributed to eNCA. It should not be read as confirmation of a particular medical condition.
Why the court ruling mattered
The dispute concerned 181 ANC candidates excluded from the ballot in six municipalities ahead of the 4 November local government elections.
According to reporting on the case, candidate information and documents had been uploaded to the IEC’s online nomination system before the deadline. The dispute centred on the final submission requirement and whether the nominations met the applicable rules.
eNCA reported that the ANC’s court victory would allow the candidates to be included on the ballot.
Pressure ahead of the elections
Mbalula had previously warned that an unsuccessful court challenge could affect the ANC’s election performance, according to IOL’s 5 October report.
Earlier on Thursday, ANC national chairperson Gwede Mantashe cautioned against blaming Mbalula before the Constitutional Court delivered its judgment, IOL reported.
This is a developing story. Information reflects the reports available at the time of writing.
