The National Prosecuting Authority has rejected claims that arrest warrants were issued for March and March leader Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma and her husband, Xolani Zuma, following the movement’s warning of imminent arrests.
The denial on Thursday, 15 October, follows a statement from March and March alleging that the couple could be arrested by Friday, 16 October. eNCA reports that KwaZulu-Natal police also dismissed the claims.
What the NPA said about the arrest warrants
NPA spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said no arrest warrants had been issued. He also rejected suggestions that political parties or public office-holders directed the authority’s prosecutorial decisions.
According to reporting by IOL, the NPA said its decisions were guided by the Constitution, legislation and evidence. It urged individuals and organisations to avoid unsupported allegations that could undermine confidence in the criminal justice process.
Police respond to the claims
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said police could trace no case registered against the pair, TimesLIVE reported on Thursday.
He urged activists to verify information with police before making public statements and warned against remarks that could cause panic or incite violence. These statements represent the police’s response to the current arrest claims.
The political backdrop
March and March, which campaigns against undocumented immigration, had linked the alleged arrests to the approaching 4 November local government elections.
The movement alleged political interference, but the reports reviewed provide no substantiation for that allegation. The NPA has expressly rejected suggestions that its prosecution decisions are politically directed, as The Witness reports.
For readers following the story, the distinction matters: the movement’s warning of arrests is a claim, while the NPA’s stated position is that no warrants were issued. That denial should not be interpreted as a court ruling or a blanket finding about every matter involving the couple.
