Employers approaching the 31 October 2026 interim reconciliation deadline should check whether SARS has successfully processed their EMP501, rather than assuming that submission alone finishes the job.
In its 29 October reminder, SARS urged outstanding filers to leave time to resolve validation failures, rejected submissions and discrepancies. The reconciliation covers payroll from 1 March to 31 August 2026.
The check after submission
SARS tells employers to inspect their submission status and PAYE Dashboard after sending the declaration. That makes the processing outcome the important follow-through check for a payroll team racing the deadline.
SBL analysis: A useful internal handover should identify who is checking that outcome and who will deal with any unresolved issue. A message saying the return was sent leaves that responsibility unclear. This is a practical control, not an additional SARS filing requirement.
What payroll teams need to reconcile
SARS’s interim filing guidance sets out the information behind the EMP501:
- PAYE, Unemployment Insurance Fund and Skills Development Levy values reconciled against the monthly EMP201 declarations, with incorrect prepopulated figures corrected where they differ from interim certificates.
- Actual payments for the period, excluding penalties and interest.
- Accurate payroll records, employee tax reference numbers and IRP5/IT3(a) certificates.
The guidance warns that missing or invalid employee income tax numbers can delay processing or lead to rejection. It also calls for regular checks of the submission status and dashboard.
A separate task from AA88 deductions
This reconciliation is distinct from the AA88 tax-debt deduction timetable recently covered by SBL. That process concerns SARS collection notices to employers; this deadline concerns reconciling payroll declarations.
The business lens: Before signing off the filing task, establish what SARS has processed and what still needs attention. The deadline is a reason to resolve an outstanding exception now, not merely to record that a file was sent.
Sources and method
Prepared and source-checked on 30 October 2026 using two SARS notices. These are primary sources from the same institution, not independent corroboration. No employer account or individual tax position was examined. General information, not individual tax advice.
